Anna Boothe
"When is a Positive a Negative? A Deep Dive into Hollow-Form Kiln Casting"
June 10 - 14, 2024 (5-day workshop)

The many steps involved in creating a kiln-cast object require you to think inside out, upside down, backwards and forwards and can often seem daunting! This process-focused workshop will attempt to demystify and mollify any of this positive-negative casting angst by offering multiple approaches to designing and casting hollow forms in glass.

Broadly defined, a hollow form is an object with a void - a traditional vessel or something else. Similar to casting a solid form, realizing a hollow form in glass can pose additional challenges. Students will learn how to transform clay/wax forms directly into glass via single and multi-part refractory molds, to build wax hollows from plaster-mold generated parts and a variety of other means and to design around forms with small openings by deconstructing their designs into elements to be cast separately and assembled post-firing. All pertinent kiln-casting basics will be covered including positive form building, refractory mold-making, glass selection, firing procedures, finishing, etc.

Previous casting experience is helpful, but not necessary.

This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Monday through Friday, with additional studio time Monday through Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm. Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.
